On TV: NOS Jeugdjournaal joined us at a nest in a hedge
NOS Jeugdjournaal made a report on the Asian hornet and filmed Jan-Pieter removing a nest from inside a tall hedge. Watch the broadcast.

This week we had a camera crew with us: NOS Jeugdjournaal, the Dutch public broadcaster's news programme for children, made a report on the Asian hornet — now officially called the geelpoothoornaar (yellow-legged hornet) in Dutch.
The reason for the report: tree surgeons have recently been attacked after unexpectedly running into a nest while pruning. Because a nest only defends itself when you get too close — and that is exactly what happens when you're up in the branches with a cherry picker or hedge trimmer.
The nest that day sat high inside a hedge. We had to work from the inside, in a suit with every opening taped shut. Not an unnecessary luxury: the week before, a hornet had flown into the suit.

Read the Jeugdjournaal's own article: Aziatische hoornaars blijven voor problemen zorgen (in Dutch).
"It's dangerous for people, but for nature it's even more dangerous. Because the hornets drive out many other insects, especially bees."
A day later Hart van Nederland also came along. You'll find both reports on our Hornets in the news page.
