Identification

How to identify the Asian hornet

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) looks like a wasp but is larger and darker. Don't confuse it with the European hornet — that one is bigger, lighter and actually beneficial.

Captured Asian hornet — clearly visible orange-yellow band and yellow leg tips
!

Asian hornet (Vespa velutina)

  • Yellow legs
Bright yellow leg tips on all six legs — the strongest identifier.
  • Dark body
Dark brown to black, with one distinct orange-yellow band on the abdomen.
  • Orange face
The head and face are orange-yellow.
  • Smaller size
Workers ~2 cm — clearly smaller than a European hornet.
European hornet (Vespa crabro) — larger, lighter and striped

European hornet (Vespa crabro)

  • Larger
Workers up to 2.5–3.5 cm — noticeably bigger than the Asian species.
  • Brown/yellow striped
Body has multiple stripes, not a single band.
  • Brown legs
    No bright yellow leg tips.
  • Protected species
The European hornet is beneficial and must not be killed casually.

FAQ

Common questions

What should I do if I see an Asian hornet?
Keep your distance, don't disturb or try to kill it, take a photo if possible and send it to us via WhatsApp. We help identify it and decide whether action is needed.
Can I remove a nest myself?
No. A disturbed nest is dangerous: Asian hornets defend en masse and can sting multiple times. Always leave removal to a specialist with protective equipment.
What does nest removal cost?
Pricing depends on height, accessibility and nest size. Send a photo and your location via WhatsApp — you'll get a no-obligation price indication.
How fast can you respond?
In most cases we can be on site within 24–48 hours in our service area. For acute situations (people or animals at risk) we move as fast as possible.
What regions do you cover?
We operate in Noord-Holland, Amsterdam, Haarlemmermeer and Kennemerland. Outside this area we'll see what we can do case by case.
What's the difference between Asian and European hornet?
The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) has bright yellow leg tips, a dark brown/black body with one orange-yellow band, and is smaller than the European hornet. The European hornet (Vespa crabro) is larger and brown/yellow striped.
